The Caroline County Commissioners will host a public information session on solar energy on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 6:30 PM. The informational session will be held at the Health and Public Services Building, 403 South 7th Street, Denton.
Caroline County is under a temporary moratorium on large solar projects in order to allow the Commissioners time to update the County Code's existing requirements in light of changing technology, consumer demands, and existing infrastructure in the County, and to evaluate the taxing, siting and construction of additional solar energy systems.
Two work groups comprised of citizens and staff representatives have made recommendations to the Commissioners, and an Ordinance is currently under consideration. However, the Commissioners want to allow an additional opportunity for the public to receive information on the solar industry, the limits of local authority over large projects, and the approval process at the State level before considering final action on the Ordinance.
“We’ve gone through an open and collaborative public process to consider these issues,” said County Commission President Dan Franklin. “But it became clear to us during that process that there are still a lot of questions from the public. We want to put the subject-area experts in the room with our residents to have a casual forum that allows them to ask their questions and get information directly from the industry, and the government agencies that regulate large solar projects.”
